Qualifications and experience

The Laurels has 4 senior care workers and a deputy manager who have a vast amount of experience caring for older people. In addition, they have for many years been employed at the Laurels. The senior care workers are supported by care workers who have completed both the Laurels and the National Training Organisation for Social Care (TOPSS) induction program which includes a period of supervised practice. Approximately 50% of the care workers have or are working towards a NVQ in care, level 2 or 3. In addition, to the rolling program of staff training, they also have yearly updates in client safer moving and handling, first aid, health and safety and fire safety training. Some of the staff have first aid at work certificates. The care workers, at the Laurels, have the skills and expertise to deliver the care which the Laurels offers to provide.

Kathreen Burns is the registered provider and manager. She is a Registered Nurse and has a BSc (honours) Nursing, a Post Graduate Diploma in Education and is completing a Masters in Health Care Ethics and Law at Manchester University.

Kathreen's nursing experience, in addition to residential care, includes high dependency nursing, coronary care, intensive care, nephrology including dialysis and on a general medical ward.

Kathreen has two years experience as a Lecturer in Nursing Studies. She continues to be invited to lecturer in nursing, ethics and law, at St Martins College. This role has included teaching both pre-registration nursing students and qualified nurses who work within the NHS and private sector. Kathreen's lecturing compliments her role within the Laurels by informing practise and ensuring high quality evidence based care.
